A Million Little Pictures - Photo Project About Art of Documenting

This is so cool. If you remember, recently I posted a recap of a collaborative project by Art House Co-op in Georgia where a few thousand people from around the world (artists & non-artists) created art in sketchbooks, sent them in and they exhibition went on tour. I was bummed that I missed the deadline for that neat project!

Thankfully, the good folks at the gallery saw my post and tipped me off to a new project - "A Million Little Pictures." I'm so excited! Here is the deal:

During the summer of 2009, one thousand artists from around the world will document their lives in 24 frames using a simple disposable camera with a flash.
On September 25th, 2009, an exhibition housing over 24,000 photographs will be constructed to take you on an adventure through the lives of these thousand artists.

We're looking for people with different cultures, ethnicities, geographic locations, and lifestyles. This is for anyone. You do not have to consider yourself an "artist" to participate.

They are going to hold the exhibition in the city that has the most participants. How cool is that? I love projects like this one (and their sketchbook project) -it's simple, creative and engaging to almost anyone.

Beautiful Examples of Animal Photography

I found the bird examples from the following post to be my favorite. This last one here is my absolute favorite - it looks majestic and the colors are...sublime.

Koala Rescued from Australia Fires

No doubt you have heard about the bad news to come out of Australia and my heart goes out to everyone touched by that tragedy. As a sublime side note to come out of that awful story is the above. That picture made me smile today - here's the context:

It was a chance encounter in the charred landscape of Australia's deadly wildfires: A koala sips water from a bottle offered by a firefighter. David Tree noticed the koala moving gingerly on scorched paws as his fire patrol passed. Clearly in pain, the animal stopped when it saw Tree.

"It was amazing, he turned around, sat on his bum and sort of looked at me with (a look) like, put me out of my misery," Tree told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I yelled out for a bottle of water. I unscrewed the bottle, tipped it up on his lips and he just took it naturally.

"He kept reaching for the bottle, almost like a baby."

The Moon...in Pictures

A few nights ago I was driving home and struck by the beauty of a full moon. How many times have you looked up at the moon in awe? One of the things I like to think about when gazing at the moon is this - that as much as man has changed over time, thousands of years ago, "primitive" man looked up with wonder in much the same way.

Beautiful Examples of Tilt-Shift Photography

Tilt-Shift miniature faking is a creative technique whereby a photograph of a life-size location or object is manipulated to give an optical illusion of a photograph of a miniature scale model. Purists take these types of pictures using a special lens, but regular images can also be manipulated using Photoshop or similar program.

Either way, the results are striking and wonderful to look at. I first saw them in a magazine recently and then the other day, I came across the following blog post and highly recommend it:

Winter Wonderland

Snow. I have a love/hate relationship with it. On one hand, it's laborious and annoying to constantly clear my looooong driveway...day after day (especially here in Madison, WI where we just broke our record for most snowfall in December!).

But on the other, it's so, so beautiful. I cherish the days when the snow is falling down in thick batches and the world is blanketed in soft, radiant white. The following are a few images that remind me of what I love about winter.
